The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a guilty plea by a man who admitted to firing a gun in the air to intimidate his Black neighbor in South Carolina.
The perpetrator pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges last week. He had publicly admitted to firing a gun in the air to scare his Black neighbor at the entrance of their subdivision because of his race.
“We welcome the guilty plea in this case and thank law enforcement authorities for bringing the perpetrator of this despicable act of racist intimidation and aggression to justice,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that CAIR previously welcomed hate crime charges against the perpetrator.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
