The Lowcountry Literacy Project (LLP) is proud to announce a new funding partnership with The Boeing Company that will help expand multisensory literacy instruction to more schools across Charleston County in 2025. Boeing’s investment will directly support the expansion of the Lowcountry Literacy Project’s Orton-Gillingham (OG) model at St. Andrew’s School of Math and Science and two Title I Elevation Schools — Matilda Dunston Elementary and Ladson Elementary — impacting 31 new teachers and hundreds of students in the years ahead.
The Lowcountry Literacy Project trains and coaches elementary educators in the Orton-Gillingham approach—a structured, sequential, and multisensory method of teaching reading that helps all students learn to read. Until recently, this kind of instruction has not been accessible in public schools. With Boeing’s support, LLP will expand teacher training and coaching. This investment builds upon Charleston’s growing movement to close literacy gaps and ensure equitable access to high-quality reading instruction for all students—particularly those in historically under-resourced communities.
The LLP will release a new data report in mid-November featuring updated findings on student growth and achievement gaps, highlighting the measurable impact of structured literacy instruction in Charleston County schools.
Lindsey Ballenger, Executive Director of the Lowcountry Literacy Project, shared: “We are deeply grateful for Boeing’s continued investment in Charleston’s children. Their partnership enables us to expand where the need is greatest—bringing structured literacy to Title I schools and giving more students the chance to experience the joy and confidence that comes from learning to read.”
Boeing is committed to preparing and inspiring the next generation of innovators and explorers. Through close collaboration with schools, community organizations, and industry partners, Boeing supports STEM education and workforce development programs tailored to the needs of the communities where employees work and live. In 2024, Boeing contributed $45.4 million across 484 grants in support of education and workforce development programs.
Erin Fisher, Senior Manager, Global Engagement added: “At Boeing, we are proud to invest in programs that strengthen our communities from the ground up. The Lowcountry Literacy Project’s evidence-based approach gives teachers the tools they need and students the foundation they deserve. Together, we are helping build brighter futures across the Lowcountry.”
