MONCKS CORNER - Adoption floor improvements are coming to Charleston Animal Society's Berkeley Campus. However, the upgrade will create short-term space issues that could impact adoptions without the public's help. "During the construction, we are going to lose half of our adoption floor which is a huge challenge," said Charleston Animal Society Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman, CAWA. "We are urging people to please come to the Berkeley Campus to adopt, so we can keep the limited space we have open for new stray animals coming in."
The adoption floor has indoor-outdoor kennels for dogs on only one side of the 20-kennel area. The construction project will now provide outdoor access for all kennels, but a portion of a wall must be torn down, fencing installed, and concrete poured.
This improvement is part of a larger $1.6-million adoption center project that was approved by the Berkeley County government last year that will include a new adoption center building for the campus.
"We are excited that this critical project is underway. We remain committed to providing quality animal care services and can't thank Charleston Animal Society enough for bringing their expertise and passion to Berkeley County in advancing our mission," said Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb.
The upgrades to the campus will happen in phases over the next several months, with a grand opening of the new Adoption Center scheduled for late Fall.
