Families are pouring into shelters and Petcos across South Carolina, looking for great deals on dog or cat adoptions during Pick Me! SC that runs through through Sunday. 1,271 dogs and cats have already been adopted.
"We are seeing so many wonderful adoption stories this week," said No Kill South Carolina Chief Lifesaving Officer Pearl Sutton. "But at the same time, so many of our shelters across the state are facing challenges that you can help solve with an open heart and a visit to your nearby rescue or shelter."
Two shelters in particular are facing challenges after neglect cases brought in dozens of animals:
- The Union County Animal Control and Shelter saw 40 animals brought in from a neglect case. This is on top of the 120 animals they currently have available for adoption.
- 28 dogs and puppies are now at Charleston Animal Society after two different neglect cases. In both cases, authorities say the animals' owners were not providing adequate care and shelter.
"This adoption event is saving so many animal lives, we really need everyone possible to consider making room for one more," Sutton said. "There has never been a better time to adopt a dog or cat."
Pick Me! SC brings together over 93 shelters, rescue organizations, and Petco Pet Care Centers, marking it as the largest annual statewide adoption event of dogs and cats in the country. For the first time ever, every county in the state is participating.
"Our goal this year is to save 2,000 animals," shared Sutton "Over the past six years, Pick Me! SC has saved more than 10,000 lives."
During the 10-day event, most shelters are offering free or low-cost adoptions. Petco Pet Care Centers across South Carolina are opening their doors to host shelters and rescue organizations, providing an unmatched opportunity to connect with potential adopters. Nearly every Petco location in the state is participating. For a complete list of shelters and Petco Pet Care Centers involved, visit PickMeSC.org.
