Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) is highlighting the availability of accessible books and devices for all ages to enable customers to experience reading without obstacles and participate in the Summer Reading Program.
The following accessible materials are available from BCLS:
Audiobooks and Digital Audiobooks:
- Audiobooks are CD recordings of a reading of a book. Digital Audiobooks are downloadable or streamable audio recordings of books that can be read on various electronic devices.
- Wonderbook is a print book with a ready-to-play audiobook inside. Kids press play to read along with their favorite books.
- Vox Books ™: The permanently attached VOX Reader transforms a print book into an all-in-one read-along. Kids push a button to listen and read.
- Enables customers the ability to read books in braille print using tactile methods for children, teens and adults.
- Books in electronic form that can be read on a computer or handheld device rather than in print. eAudiobooks or digital audiobooks are audio recordings of books that can be downloaded and listened to on computers, mobile phones, tablets and other devices with audiobook playback capabilities.
- A book that uses a significantly larger font size than a standard paperback. The fonts are typically 14-point or larger. They are specifically designed for customers with low vision, reading difficulties like dyslexia, and old adults who may experience age-related vision changes.
- Preloaded content of educational apps and games that do not require Wi-Fi for use.
"We want to provide accessible formats and devices for customers to participate in the Summer Reading Program and enjoy the Library throughout the year!" - Gene Brunson, MLIS, Director, Berkeley County Library System
