YWCA Greater Charleston on Thursday announced the creation of a new community award — The Horace Mungin Social Justice Award — and they are now accepting nominations for its inaugural recipients.
This award will be presented annually at the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Reception, held as part of the organization's longstanding MLK Celebration, now entering its 54th year.
You can nominate an individual or organization here: https://form.jotform.com/
The Horace Mungin Social Justice Award will recognize two honorees each year:
- One individual who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to advancing justice, equity, and the rights of the oppressed
- One nonprofit organization whose work meaningfully addresses systemic barriers and uplifts historically marginalized communities.
A native of Hollywood, South Carolina, Horace Mungin was a pioneering literary voice whose work helped spark the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 70s. His poetry and prose challenged systems of oppression, gave voice to Black identity and liberation, and helped awaken a generation to the fight for freedom and justice.
This new award honors that legacy by recognizing contemporary leaders and organizations who are carrying that torch forward in our time.
Award Selection Process
- Nominations opened on Aug. 30, 2025
- Political candidates who are declared and actively seeking office are not eligible.
- If a posthumous award is selected in any given year, a second living recipient will also be named.
