JOHNS ISLAND - Sea Island Habitat for Humanity announced that, thanks to the generosity of community supporters and dedicated participants, it has raised more than $130,000 to fully fund the materials cost for the 2026 Women Build home.
Women Build Week 2026, presented by Publix Super Market Charities, is expected to be one of the largest in the affiliate’s history. Beginning Monday, Feb. 23, more than 300 volunteers — most of them women — will visit the job site, donating their time and energy to transform the funded materials into a permanent home for Ms. Carol, a longtime resident of Johns Island.
“Reaching this $130,000 goal ensures that every nail, beam and shingle is paid for before the first wall even goes up,” said Emily Speck, director of development for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. “But the heart of this project is the 300 volunteers showing up this week. They aren’t just building a structure; they are standing in solidarity with Ms. Carol to ensure a longtime neighbor can remain rooted in the community she loves.”
Ms. Carol, who has deep ties to the Sea Islands, will purchase the home through an affordable, zero-interest mortgage after completing her own 300 “sweat equity” hours alongside volunteers. For her, the home represents a lifetime of hard work culminating in the stability of homeownership.
Impact by the Numbers:
- Total Raised: $130,000+ (100% of construction material costs covered).
- Volunteer Power: 300+ individuals, mostly women, providing over 1,200 combined hours of labor this week.
- The Future Homeowner: Ms. Carol, a long-time Johns Island resident and Habitat partner.
- The Location: 1535 Keswick Blvd, Johns Island
- Dates: February 23-28
