Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to unleash their wild sides on the nature trails of Caw Caw Interpretive Center when the Charleston County Parks hosts the annual Where the Wild Things Run 5K and Kids Dash on Saturday, March 1. Registration is now open and ends Feb. 26. Early registration is encouraged as this event is expected to sell out in advance.
Seasoned or beginning runners and those who simply enjoy a peaceful walk in nature are invited to explore the scenic trails of Caw Caw. Adults and kids alike are encouraged to take advantage of family-friendly yoga and other activities throughout the morning. After the race, stick around for the awards ceremony with food and beverages.
The race begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 and is open to all abilities and fitness levels. The 5K is for runners and walkers of all abilities ages 8 and up; ages 10-15 will need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Ages 3-7 can participate in the Wild Kids Dash, an untimed fun run that includes a finisher medal. The 5K race fee is $38 and the Kids Dash is $5. Registration ends Wednesday, Feb. 26. To help preserve and protect the site’s natural resources and interpretive trails, dogs and bicycles are not allowed at Caw Caw. Please be aware that the course offers occasional areas of uneven terrain and varies from hard-packed trails with roots to grass and boardwalks. Strollers are not recommended during Where the Wild Things Run. Water stations will be available on the course, but pre-filled, personal water bottles are highly recommended. The race course is a loop. Accessible parking and restrooms are available.
Caw Caw Interpretive Center is a 654-acre site in Ravenel that is rich in natural, cultural and historical resources. It contains areas managed for wildlife including waterfowl, songbirds, otters, deer and more, as well as favored habitats for rare wildlife such as American Alligators, Swallow-tailed Kites, Bald Eagles and others. The scenic park features more than seven miles of trails with trailside exhibits, elevated boardwalks through wetlands, historic rice fields, remnants of a former tea farm, and wildlife habitats.
Where the Wild Things Run is one of three 5K races in Charleston County Parks’ 5K Trail Run/Walk Series. The series includes Where the Wild Things Run, Lowcountry Trail 5K, and Chili 5K.
