As more travelers seek to trade in traditional sightseeing for deeper, hands-on connections to the places they visit, experiential travel is reshaping how we, particularly Millennials, vacation, with 60% saying that authentic cultural experiences are the most essential part of any trip.
In Charleston, a city brimming with rich history, countless activities and a world-class food scene, it can be hard to know where to begin. The Palmetto Hotel has taken the guesswork out of planning with its new Charleston Crab Adventure, a package designed to immerse guests in one of the Lowcountry’s most beloved foodways.
Created in partnership with Barrier Island EcoTours, the experience features a scenic boat ride through Charleston’s marine ecosystem, where a naturalist guide shares knowledge about dolphins, birds and other local marine life before reaching the remote shores of Capers Island, a pristine barrier island only accessible by water. Once ashore, guests learn to crab the old-fashioned way using hand lines and nets while the guide pulls crab traps and teaches the group about the life cycles of blue and stone crabs. The adventure wraps with a traditional crab boil on the beach, where freshly steamed crabs are dumped on the table for guests to crack and enjoy with fresh butter, for an unforgettable Lowcountry experience that most visitors never get to experience.
