WalletHub released a report on States Where People Spend the Most & Least on Groceries, and South Carolina ranked as spending the 9th most in the country.
To create the rankings, WalletHub examined the prices of 26 common grocery items across all 50 states, then compared the total cost to each state’s median household income to see where people are spending the largest share of their income on groceries.
Grocery Spending in South Carolina (1=Most Expensive; 25=Avg.):
- Average Cost of Groceries: $123.28
- Average Cost of Groceries as % of Median Monthly Household Income: 2.21%
- 22nd – Average Price of Eggs
- 9th – Average Price of Potatoes
- 7th – Average Price of Bananas
- 23rd – Average Price of Sugar
- 21st – Average Price of Soft Drinks
