Personal finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2025's Best & Worst States to Raise a Family and South Carolina was listed as the 9th worst in the country. The Palmetto State had the exact same ranking last year.
To determine the best states in which to put down family roots, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 50 key indicators of family-friendliness. Our data set includes factors like the median annual family income, housing affordability, health care quality, crime rate, and school quality.

- 43rd – % of Families with Young Children
- 39th – Infant-Mortality Rate
- 37th – Median Annual Family Income (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
- 43rd – Violent Crimes per Capita
- 41st – % of Families in Poverty
- 27th – Housing Affordability
- 39th – Unemployment Rate
- 30th – Separation & Divorce Rate
