Sea Island Habitat for Humanity is officially kicking off its Mid-Year Annual Appeal, inviting the Lowcountry community to help transform “Blueprints to Bricks.” This year’s campaign focuses on starting the development of Sweetgrass Preserve, a brand-new affordable housing neighborhood designed to ensure that those who serve the island can afford to live here.
While the land is secured and blueprints are drawn, the organization is now racing to secure the building materials and volunteer power needed to move from a “quiet of potential” to the sounds of progress. With the cost to build a single-family home currently averaging about $150,000, every contribution is vital to making these homes a reality.
A Teacher Planting Roots
Among the first homeowners moving into the neighborhood this year is Maria, a local early childhood education teacher. For years, Maria has built foundations for the community's youngest dreamers, but she struggled to secure a foundation of her own.
Her new 3-bedroom, 2-bath home at Sweetgrass Preserve is more than just four walls; it is a promise of a safe, permanent sanctuary for Maria and her elderly grandmother. Maria’s story reflects the mission of this mid-year appeal: ensuring that dedicated community members can finally plant permanent roots in the soil that raised them.
Ways to Support the Build
Sea Island Habitat for Humanity invites supporters to contribute through donations of any size or by joining the effort on-site as a volunteer.
- Donate to the Founding Builder Circles: Financial gifts at any level ensure homes in Sweetgrass Preserve are built to the highest standard.
- Volunteer to Build: The community is invited to pick up a hammer and work alongside future homeowners. No experience is necessary to help turn these blueprints into a standing reality.
“We are ready to build, and we are simply waiting for our community to stand with us,” says John E. Rhoden, Jr., Executive Director. “When you support this appeal, you aren't just building a house; you are building a neighborhood of hope”.
How to Participate
Donations can be made securely by visiting the website or mailing a check to the Johns Island office. For those looking to volunteer on a build site this summer, please contact Sea Island Habitat for Humanity for upcoming opportunities.
