Navy Yard Charleston today announced that it is establishing the Charleston Design District, a hub for designers to create and source premium home furnishings, featuring design showrooms for a wide range of product lines. Located along the Cooper River in North Charleston, the Charleston Design District will span areas of the former Charleston Naval Base and surrounding historic campus when it officially launches in the fall.
Home furnishings companies Kravet, Schumacher, and Textures have signed leases for first-to-market showroom locations in the District. They will join beloved and established Charleston brands, such as The Urban Electric Co., Fritz Porter, and Smithey Ironware Company, bringing together showrooms and innovative maker spaces to create a collective design guild and resource-rich hub for interior design ideation and creation. In total, Navy Yard Charleston plans to include up to 150,000 square feet of design showroom spaces and serve as a regional design hub for the Lowcountry—from the Outer Banks to Savannah.
The Charleston Design District will also feature a wide range of dining experiences, including a new full-service rooftop restaurant from acclaimed Charleston restaurateur Steve Palmer of Indigo Road Hospitality Group. The forthcoming concept will encompass 8,200 square feet atop Navy Yard Charleston’s Storehouse Nine, providing indoor and outdoor seating with views of the Cooper River and historic shipyard.
The Charleston Design District is a central component of Navy Yard Charleston, a multi-phase redevelopment to transform the former Charleston Naval Base into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood. The redevelopment is led by Jamestown alongside local Charleston real estate developers Weaver Capital Partners and WECCO Development.
“The history and architecture of the area offer a strong anchor and compelling backdrop for the Charleston Design District,” said Michael Phillips, President of Jamestown. “The formation of the Charleston Design District is, in part, a response to the diverse design and creative community that has amassed throughout the neighborhood over the past few years. We want to foster and grow that community to create the most extensive and innovative selection of interior furnishings in the coastal Carolinas.”
At Navy Yard Charleston, design showrooms will initially be focused to an enclave of repurposed, turn-of-the-century storehouses known as Storehouse Row. Kravet, a leader in home furnishings available exclusively to the trade, has leased a 2,240-square-foot showroom in Navy Yard Charleston’s Storehouse Eight. Esteemed design house Schumacher, which offers to-the-trade fabric, wallpaper, and trim, has leased a 3,760-square-foot showroom, also in Storehouse Eight. Patterson Flynn, renowned luxury rug and textile purveyor and Schumacher’s sister brand, will also have a presence in the new space. Textures, a Nashville-based luxury flooring company known for its curated, timeless wood finishes, has leased a 1,620-square-foot showroom in Storehouse Nine.
“We are delighted to be in such great company at the Charleston Design District,” said Daniel Kravet, VP of Sales at Kravet. “Our Kravet Workspace model provides a seamless and efficient shopping experience for our customers, and we’re excited to be a part of the founding of this design hub.”
In addition to the forthcoming showrooms and restaurant, the Charleston Design District will also feature an array of other esteemed design and maker tenants already open in the neighborhood. These include, within Navy Yard Charleston: The Urban Electric Co., Floral Studies, Middleton Made Knives, Kate McDonald Bridal, Post Loyal Architecture, IOLA Modern, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, Inc., and Nidum Gallery. Within the Navy Yard Industrial Campus: Fritz Porter, Bibelot Home, LulaKate, Benjamin Paul Studio, Studio Sontosis, TTS Studios, Sisal Creative, Robert Long Lighting, Datum Workshop, and Robert Thomas Iron Design, as well as Celadon Home and Smithey Ironware Company. Once officially launched in the fall, the Charleston Design District will be supported by thematic and dimensional programming that connects the showrooms and provides meaningful experiences for designers.
