Myrtle Beach - The Waccamaw Community Foundation (WCF) is encouraging local nonprofits, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, and residents across the Grand Strand to take advantage of a significant national funding opportunity through the Knight Cities Challenge, an initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
As part of a select group of Knight communities, the Myrtle Beach region is eligible to compete for a share of $5 million in funding for innovative ideas that strengthen local communities and drive economic vitality. Individual projects may receive up to $200,000 in support.
“This is a rare opportunity for our region to bring forward bold ideas and secure national investment,” said Michael L. Mancuso, President & CEO of the Waccamaw Community Foundation. “We know there are individuals and organizations here doing meaningful work every day. This challenge gives them a platform—and the resources—to scale those ideas and make a lasting impact.”
Opportunity Aligned with Regional Growth
The Knight Cities Challenge is focused on projects that enhance:
- Economic opportunity and workforce development
- Arts, culture, and community vibrancy
- Access to local information and civic engagement
For a region where tourism and hospitality serve as the primary economic drivers, WCF believes this opportunity is especially relevant.
“Our community continues to grow, and with that growth comes both opportunity and challenge,” Mancuso added. “We are encouraging ideas that not only improve quality of life for residents but also strengthen the visitor experience and long-term sustainability of our regional economy.”
Simple Application, Big Impact
The application process begins with a short, concept-based submission, making it accessible to a wide range of applicants—from established nonprofits to first-time innovators.
WCF is encouraging early participation and stands ready to help connect applicants with resources, partnerships, and guidance where appropriate.
The application period opens April 1, 2026. Project ideas must focus on at least one of Knight’s investment areas: strengthening local news and information, creating pathways for economic opportunity or cultivating connection through arts, culture and the places that bring people together. Knight Foundation will invest up to $200,000 in selected projects, which are expected to be completed within one year. Applications must be submitted by April 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET.
