This Thanksgiving, Pet Helpers is introducing Barksgiving, a special foster program designed to give adoptable dogs a short holiday break from the shelter. The program allows these dogs to experience a loving home for a few days, providing rest, socialization, and the chance to shine in a new environment.
Dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages are available for Barksgiving, each one eager for a cozy home during the holiday. Pet Helpers is especially seeking fosters for dogs that do best as the only pet in a household. These dogs adore people but may not get along with other dogs — and that’s okay. Barksgiving offers them a chance to be seen in a new light, outside the shelter setting, while helping staff manage the number of animals in care and providing a meaningful reprieve during the busy season.
“Barksgiving is a win-win for everyone,” said Melissa Susko, executive director of Pet Helpers. “Our animals get a break from the shelter environment, gain valuable socialization, and get introduced to a whole new audience through our fosters’ friends, family, and social media. For our staff, it’s a small reprieve that helps us provide the best care for every animal. And while some fosters may discover a forever friend, our main goal is simply to give these dogs the holiday break they deserve.”
Interested fosters can sign up by completing the Barksgiving Foster Questionnaire, which helps staff match each dog with the most suitable home. Pet Helpers provides all necessary supplies — including crates, food, toys, and more — so fosters only need to provide a safe, loving environment. For safety and continuity, participants must remain in town during the foster period.
Pet Helpers encourages anyone who can open their home for a few days to consider participating. The program is designed as a short-term commitment, giving dogs comfort, attention, and love they don’t always experience in a shelter.
