Charleston Animal Society hosted its 152nd annual meeting and Lifesaving Celebration on April 16, 2026, at Trident Technical College, bringing together community leaders, supporters and partners to reflect on a year of impact and outline the future of animal welfare in South Carolina.
As one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the United States, Charleston Animal Society highlighted its continued leadership of No Kill South Carolina, which has helped save more than 1 million animals statewide since 2016. The organization also announced the next phase of its work through a new statewide workforce development initiative.
A key moment of the event was the recognition of U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, whose support helped secure Charleston Animal Society’s first congressionally directed appropriation, providing funding to expand workforce training and capacity across South Carolina through a new initiative expected to be announced this summer.
“We have reached a defining moment,” said Joe Elmore, president and CEO of Charleston Animal Society. “Sustaining lifesaving progress requires not just commitment, but investment in people, systems and communities. This initiative positions South Carolina to lead the nation in building that foundation.”
The event also featured:
- Berkeley County receiving the Public Service Award for leadership in advancing animal welfare at the community level; the award was accepted by Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb
- The organization’s inaugural South Carolina Ambassador Award presented to Best Friends Animal Society and accepted by CEO Julie Castle
- A national outlook on animal care and sheltering presented by Fraily Rodriguez, senior director of strategic programs at Best Friends Animal Society
- An overview of the organization’s 2025 impact, including lifesaving programs, community initiatives and statewide collaboration, presented by Gerri Greenwood, incoming co-board chair
- A forward-looking address outlining Charleston Animal Society’s strategic priorities for 2026 and beyond presented by Elmore
The annual meeting brought together donors, volunteers, adopters and community leaders to celebrate progress and reinforce a shared commitment to protecting animals and strengthening communities.
