Alongside the excellent food and drink on offer and the various entertaining offerings that locals tend to enjoy, Charleston has a somewhat spooky history. In fact, it’s no secret that the port city in South Carolina has some scary stories associated with it.
Charleston attracts people from all around the world for this very reason. People embark on ghost tours, explore some of the area’s rich history that is connected to the haunted places of today, and speak to knowledgeable locals who have spine-chilling stories to share. While we aren’t talking about the zombies seen in popular titles like Relax Gaming’s Zombie Circus and in hit TV shows like The Walking Dead here, there are stories around ghosts and spirits that occupy some of Charleston’s familiar locations. Many of these haunted spots are located in the downtown area of Charleston, meaning that you might’ve even been there yourself.
The Old Charleston Jail
Whether it’s in the UK or in the United States of America, some of the most haunted destinations in the world tend to be jails. Given the horrors that tend to occur there, it probably comes as no surprise either. For locals, The Old Charleston Jail is associated with a number of terrifying stories. Given that the jail housed crazed criminals and mass murderers, including the country’s first-ever female serial killer, it’s a truly eerie place to explore. Visitors to the old jail have heard noises, they’ve seen footprints, and they’ve felt a presence located throughout the historic jail. Certainly, a place only the brave experience, The Old Charleston Jail is easily one of Charleston’s most haunted places.
The Blind Tiger Pub
There are some great locations in the city to enjoy a delicious cocktail or ten, but The Blind Tiger Pub probably isn’t somewhere everyone rushes to, given its dark past. Both staff and pub-goers have shared a number of stories, with angry spirits frequenting the pub on a regular basis. A unique place to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, The Blind Tiger Pub is well worth a visit if you’re interested in this sort of thing.
The Battery Carriage House
While some locals prefer to ignore Charleston’s spooky past and present, it’s almost impossible to live in the city without hearing about The Battery Carriage House. Since the 1840s, numerous tales have emerged surrounding the former home and ballroom. These days, it’s a popular hotel that is rated highly by its guests, but a variety of paranormal activities have been reported by both staff and guests over the years. You might have to stay there to find out for yourself, though.
The Pink House
Although it looks rather pretty on the outside, The Pink House has a dark feel to it. Sure, the art and jewelry people purchase from there in the modern world are superb, but it’s a venue that is said to be haunted. Over a century ago, it was one of the Red Light district’s most popular locations, with prostitutes known to hang around outside and pirates being keen to use their services. Nowadays, The Pink House still feels their presence, with some horrific stories being shared by both workers and customers.

When the sun goes down, spirits are known to visit White Point Garden. Some of them will be pleased to see you, but many locals have said that not all of them are quite as welcoming.
