The Robb Report, a luxury-lifestyle magazine, on Wednesday released its list of “The 100 Greatest American Restaurants of the 21st Century,” and three Charleston establishments earned spots — the only South Carolina restaurants to be included.
Charleston’s honorees are:
No. 15 – Husk
- "What Sean Brock created with Husk is larger than just a restaurant; he mined the history of Southern Food and brought it to new heights. Founded in the fall of 2010 by Brock with Neighborhood Dining Group, Husk was built inside a restored two-story Victorian manse in Charleston and opened not long after Brock had won a James Beard Award for his work at McCrady’s. As part of his mission at the restaurant, Brock worked with producers like Glenn Roberts at Anson Mills to revive heirloom grains native to the South. It tapped into the restaurant world’s prevailing ethos of the time, where chefs looked locally for ingredients and inspiration."
No. 66 – FIG
- "Charleston has carved out a strong culinary identity this century, and that owes a lot to chef Mike Lata and his team at FIG. Lata opened the restaurant in 2003, and over the years the James Beard Award-winning chef—including 15 years with Jason Stanhope in the kitchen, who also won a James Beard Award for his work at FIG—merged European sensibilities with Southern ingredients. The menu rotates with the seasons, but some dishes endure, like the ricotta gnocchi with lamb Bolognese."
No. 88 – Chubby Fish
- "This little dock-to-dish seafood restaurant rotates its menu daily based on what chef James London’s suppliers can get to him fresh out of the water. The 40-seat Chubby Fish doesn’t take any reservations; patrons can line up starting at 4 p.m. to get their name on the list for the night. If they do get in, they’re greeted with a raw bar led by the restaurant’s signature caviar and crème-fraiche sandwich and oysters from up and down the Atlantic coast."
The list highlights restaurants across the country that the magazine says have shaped dining culture over the past two decades.
