The Lonon Foundation, a Charleston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting children impacted by a parent or caregiver's cancer diagnosis, announced details for their 2nd Annual Shuck Fest. This oyster roast fundraiser will take place on Sunday, November 3rd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.n. at the Isle of Palms Exchange Club.
Attendees can enjoy local oysters from Sandlapper Events, BBQ from Swig and Swine, and brews from Frothy Beard, with wine also available for purchase. Tickets are priced at $50 in advance and $60 at the door, with all proceeds benefiting free psychosocial and emotional resources for children affected by cancer.
Shuck Fest will feature a live band, a 50/50 raffle, and both live and virtual auctions. Auction highlights include a two-hour charter with Charleston Party Cat for up to 16 guests, a week-long stay at Folly Beach, an exclusive eight-course private dining experience from Rosemary & Rye, and two Chairman Level Tickets to an Atlanta Braves game. Event merchandise will also be available for purchase.
Since its inception in 2017, The Lonon Foundation has supported over 250 children through programs designed by Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS). These specialists focus on the developmental effects of parental cancer on children, providing vital tools for coping and emotional support.
“It’s crucial to offer age-appropriate support to these children,” said Katie Myers, MS, CCLS. “Our goal is to enhance coping skills and comfort for families navigating this difficult journey.”
In addition to direct support, The Lonon Foundation offers the UPLIFT program, which provides free in-person and virtual events for children aged 5-17, promoting mindfulness and connection with peers facing similar challenges. Families enrolled in UPLIFT can also access mini grants to help alleviate the financial burden of cancer treatment. Additionally, Family Resource Kits are available at local cancer clinics, hospitals, and schools, aiding parents in discussing their diagnoses with children in an age-appropriate manner.
“There is an increasing need for these services as early-onset cancer rates rise,” said Founder Anna Lonon. “Many of these families need guidance on supporting their children. Our programming is designed to empower both children and families during this emotional time.”
If you can’t attend in person, the online auction will go live on October 27th, one week before the event.
