Chef partner Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya, in collaboration with The Indigo Road Hospitality Group, announced the opening of Shokudô, now officially welcoming guests on upper King Street in downtown Charleston. The modern Japanese tavern takes inspiration from the iconic izakayas—casual pubs—of Japan.
“With Shokudô, I want to create a place that feels welcoming to everyone—a spot where you can stop in after work for a quick bite or spend the evening sharing dishes with friends,” said Hamaya. “Japanese food is about connection and comfort, but it’s also about discovery. My hope is that guests in Charleston will come to see Japanese cuisine in a new light—not just sushi or fine dining, but something relaxed, soulful and full of heart.”
Shokudô’s izakaya-style menu centers around a dual robata grill, where charcoal and wood flames combine to create dishes such as an array of shareable grilled skewers, handmade dumplings, seasonal ramen and fresh hand rolls.
Menu highlights include Kamo Tsukune Kushiyaki with duck meatball, lotus root, tare and onsen yolk, and Nagoya Mazesoba with tonkotsudare, wild boar, crispy chili, shrimp miso, Tokyo negi and onsen egg—each showcasing bold yet balanced takes on Japanese comfort food.
Shokudô’s beverage program features cocktails, a beer, and sake, available at the bar, in the dining room or on the back patio. Highlights include the Stalk Market (gin, lemongrass, lime, grapefruit, shiso, Batavia Arrack and Sichuan pepper) and Shochu and Tell (Iichiko Silhouette Shochu, Chinola passionfruit, Domaine de Canton, orgeat, Ancho chili and lime).
