Mex 1 Coastal Cantina will mark Veterans Day by offering free meals to veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at all of its Charleston-area locations.
Through a partnership with the Folly Beach-based Warrior Surf Foundation — which offers surf therapy, yoga, and wellness programs for veterans coping with PTSD and other challenges — Mex 1 donates $1 from every Pineapple Margarita sold to fund the nonprofit’s 12-week therapy program.
Since the partnership began, Mex 1 has raised more than $40,000 for Warrior Surf Foundation, including $6,500 so far this year. Those funds help provide weeklong surf, yoga, and wellness retreats for veterans in Costa Rica.
This year’s retreat, the fifth annual collaboration between Mex 1 and Warrior Surf, was documented in a short film that will premiere Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6–8 p.m. at Firefly Distillery. The event — Waves That Heal, Stories That Matter: A WSF x Mex 1 Film Event — is open to the public and will feature food from Mex 1, a Warrior Surf Foundation merchandise shop, and a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds supporting the foundation’s programs.
“Veterans are part of the fabric of the Lowcountry,” said Dave Lorenz, owner of Mex 1 Coastal Cantina. “Our long-standing partnership with Warrior Surf Foundation ensures veterans in our community have ongoing access to healing, connection, and support.”
Mex 1 West Ashley is open daily at 11 a.m. at 817 St. Andrews Blvd. The Sullivan’s Island location, 2205 Middle St., opens at noon Monday through Thursday during the winter and at 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday year-round.
