Why Hoppin’ John and collard greens?
Across the American South, many families welcome the new year with a plate of Hoppin’ John and collard greens—a tradition rooted in symbolism, history and a little superstition.
Hoppin’ John, typically made with black-eyed peas, rice and pork, is believed to bring good luck in the year ahead. Collard greens represent money, making them a hopeful nod toward financial fortune in the coming year.
In addition to the New Year's special, Melvin's is offering holiday catering. Orders require a 72-hour notice. Melvin’s offers pick-up (10-person minimum) from its Mount Pleasant or James Island locations.
