After more than 26 years on King Street, Silver Dollar will close its doors for good on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Opened in December 1999 by owner Steve Sher at 478 King St., the bar - known simply as “the Dollar” to its regulars - became a longtime fixture of Charleston nightlife.
“For more than 26 years, this bar has been my second home, and it’s become home to countless people who made it part of their lives,” Sher said. “We’ve watched Charleston grow, celebrated milestones, mourned losses, made lifelong friends, and shared more incredible nights than I could ever count.
“To every person who ever pushed open our front door — thank you. You built this place just as much as I did. I am forever grateful to Charleston and to everyone who has been part of the Silver Dollar family.”

For the final night, DJ DougieEllis will help lead the celebration, with an open invitation to every DJ who has called Silver Dollar home over the years to come back and play a set.
"To everyone who worked at the Dollar, played on its stage, stepped behind the DJ booth, sang karaoke, shot pool, grabbed a post-shift drink, met someone there, celebrated there or simply found themselves ending another night at 478 King St.: Thank you," Sher said.
