Joe Cunningham Law announced it will host a community food drive Nov. 3–7, 2025, at its office located at 44 Folly Road, Suite C, Charleston. The drive will benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank in response to the impending suspension of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
With federal funding halted, SNAP benefits — commonly known as food stamps — are set to stop after Nov. 1, leaving millions of Americans without assistance to buy groceries. According to the South Carolina Department of Social Services, more than 556,000 South Carolinians across 266,000 households — including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities — relied on approximately $104 million in benefits in September.
“Having served in Congress during the longest government shutdown in history in 2019, I saw firsthand the devastating ripple effects these political failures have on real people,” said former Congressman and attorney Joe Cunningham. “Every shutdown looks different, but the anxiety and pain for families who rely on programs like SNAP is always the same. When a family’s primary source for putting food on the table vanishes overnight, it’s our local responsibility to respond. This food drive is about providing immediate relief and showing our community that we have each other's backs.”
The drive will collect nonperishable food items to help stock the shelves of the Lowcountry Food Bank, which supports more than 240 partner agencies across South Carolina. Organizers say donations are critical to help bridge the gap for families who have unexpectedly lost their primary means of purchasing groceries.
FYI - the most needed items are: Canned meats (tuna, chicken), canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice, beans, and shelf-stable milk.
“Our firm is built on the principle of serving our community, and that means stepping up when our community is in crisis,” Cunningham said. “We’re calling on everyone in the Charleston area who is able to donate. Every can of food, every box of pasta, will make a real difference in the life of a family facing hunger this November.”
