The yearslong effort to bring a community tavern from the team behind New York’s The Dead Rabbit to 549 King St. has come to a dispiriting close.
The owners of Hazel and Apple, first announced in 2022, confirmed Tuesday that the concept will not move forward. The announcement was made on social media.
In a statement, owners Sean Muldoon and Jillian Vose (pictured) cited ongoing delays and rising costs as the primary reasons for the decision.
“Many of you have been asking for an update on the status of the bar. The truth is, we fought tirelessly to make this happen and dedicated ourselves entirely to this endeavor, but ultimately, it wasn’t to be,” the statement read. “We truly believed in the concept, our partnership, the location and in Charleston — and we still do. However, the delays we encountered drove costs higher and higher until it no longer made business sense to continue.
“When we finally received our permits back in August, the promised funding never materialized, and this latest obstacle proved to be the final straw.
“We do not doubt that we would have created something special for the Charleston food and beverage community, and we are genuinely sorry that Hazel and Apple never came to fruition. We thank you for your continued support throughout this journey.”
The last concept to occupy 549 King St. was Bonny's Hideaway, a tiki-inspired, pop-up bar.
