On Wednesday, July 23, Charleston Wine + Food invites the community to an intimate evening honoring one of the most influential voices in Southern cuisine: Edna Lewis. Join Emmy Award-winning writer, culinary historian, podcaster, and executive producer Deb Freeman for a screening of the PBS documentary Finding Edna Lewis—a powerful portrait of Lewis’s life, legacy, and the path she paved for generations of Black chefs and storytellers. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Palmer Amphitheater at the Culinary Institute of Charleston (66 Columbus Street, Room 182).
"Edna Lewis didn’t just cook—she preserved culture, memory, and identity," Freeman said. "I’m honored to bring her story to Charleston, where the echoes of her work still shape the Southern table today."
Following the screening, Freeman will be joined in conversation by Amethyst Ganaway, a North Charleston native and nationally recognized chef and food writer, to explore Lewis’s indelible impact on Southern cooking, both in the Lowcountry and across the country.
Guests will enjoy Edna Lewis-inspired bites and sips, carefully curated to reflect the seasonality and soul of her iconic cooking.
