In celebration of National Prosecco Week, Charleston native and serial entrepreneur Justin “Luchi” Wages, alongside co-founders David Kinloch and Andre Grundy, will host a launch and tasting of the new Don Luchi Prosecco on Sunday, June 30th, at Lamar’s Sporting Club.
In 2023, Wages traveled to Italy to source and craft what would be debuted in Charleston as the Don Luchi Prosecco, a profile Black-owned brand. Officially known as Don Luchi Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G., the company says this sparkling wine "boasts vibrant effervescence and a distinctive flavor profile derived from the unique acidity of the Glera grape."
“Don Luchi represents a changing landscape in the wine industry," said Femi Oyediran, sommelier and co-owner of Graft Wine Shop. "I am proud to see local friends in Charleston, South Carolina, add to the conversation about what it looks like to own a wine brand. This is truly a moment worth celebrating—and luckily, we can pop bottles of Don Luchi to do just that.”
Don Luchi is one of fewer than ten minority-owned Prosecco brands in the country and bears a D.O.C.G. designation that ranks it among the highest quality of Italian wines.
“Our journey to bring Don Luchi Prosecco here to Charleston is fueled by our passion for excellence and a desire to offer something truly special to our hometown’s vibrant food and beverage landscape,” Wages said.
The company says ideal pairings for Don Luchi include delicate first and second courses, mildly spicy dishes, and the tangy creaminess of soft cheeses such as triple cream Camembert. The light-bodied Prosecco also pairs exceptionally well with Gullah Geechee-inspired dishes and Lowcountry specialties such as shrimp and grits, fried whiting with red rice, or a classic seafood boil.
