Once Upon a Time in America
Once Upon a Time in America… the image of what it was to be an American was forged. Music and art underlined it all, and often played a crucial role in forwarding the dignity of the American people. Yes; our history defines us, and we have some serious musical history to share with you!
James P Johnson's “Carolina Shout", Aaron Copland’s opera; “The Tender Land”, reveals the unique character and faith of poor farmers of the 1930s. Then the dignity and strength of the American worker male and female with his “Fanfare for the Common Man”. Leonard Bernstein’s “Suite From On the Waterfront” captures the indomitable nature of American dock workers’ violence struggle against union corruption in the 1950s.
Join Musical Director Ron Mendola and the Mt Pleasant Symphony as we recall our heritage and the American soul with these seminal works! As always, there’ll be a few surprises as well!
