Brookgreen Gardens 1931 Brookgreen Drive, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina 29576
Brookgreen Gardens will exhibit a collection of works by botanical artist Anne Blackwell Thompson, created from foliage harvested from Brookgreen's botanical gardens. One of Brookgreen's artists-in-residence for 2023, Thompson's work highlights the intersection of art and horticulture. The Bounty of Brookgreen Gardens will be displayed in the Noble Gallery of the Rainey Pavilion from November 19th, 2023, to January 1st, 2024, and open to the public during Nights of a Thousand Candles.
"We are thrilled to welcome back Anne Blackwell Thompson, whose exquisite artistry perfectly captures the essence of Brookgreen's botanical wonders through her one-of-a-kind creations," says Page Kiniry, President and CEO of Brookgreen Gardens. "Anne's work seamlessly aligns with our dual commitment to promoting gifted artists and preserving and displaying indigenous flora. Each of her pieces is a unique masterpiece, and we are especially honored to host her for the second time this year."
Harvesting from the swamps of South Carolina, the gardens of Virginia's countryside, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and the mountains of the Shenandoah Valley, artist and plants woman Anne Blackwell Thompson preserves foliage and flowers using centuries-old traditions and turns her bounties into artistic compositions. A combination of years of botanical study, significant training in studio art, and her love of the natural world go into making her beautiful pressed botanical art. She further honed her skills while studying as an apprentice to world-renowned botanical artist Stuart Thornton in Turin, Italy.
A public opening for The Bounty of Brookgreen Gardens will be held on November 19th at 1 pm. Republic of Tea will be serving samples of their botanical teas. All pieces in the exhibit will be available for purchase through Keepsakes, the museum shop at Brookgreen, but must remain in the exhibit until the January 1st closing.
