According to Elle, astro-tourism is one of this fall's hottest travel and entertainment trends. With the Perseid meteor shower continuing and expected to peak Aug. 12-13 from 11 p.m. until sunrise, here are some of the best viewing spots in the Charleston area.
- The Ansonborough Rooftop Garden offers a prime downtown viewing location with less light pollution thanks to its proximity to the water. The rooftop features comfortable seating, and guests can enjoy cocktails from the hotel's Scarborough & Squirrel Bar. Overnight guests can head straight to bed after a night of stargazing.
- Pitt St. Bridge in Mount Pleasant's Old Village offers stargazers a clear view of the sky with a scenic backdrop of marshes and Cove Inlet.
- The Lighthouse Inlet on Folly Beach is removed from the city's lights and provides an unobstructed view of the night sky. Away from the more heavily trafficked beaches, it's a peaceful place to watch the meteors.
- Capers Island, accessible only by boat, offers camping and unobstructed, 360-degree views of the night sky. Without artificial lights or buildings for miles, the island experiences virtually no light pollution.
