Charleston native and contemporary street artist, Shepard Fairey, on Monday appeared on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show to discuss Artists For Democracy, a multi-platform, get-out-the vote campaign aimed at using artwork to mobilize Americans across the country, particularly in battleground states, to defend fundamental freedoms. You can watch the interview below.
Fairey was born and raised in the Holy City and attended the Porter-Gaud School. He rose to fame began in 1989 with the creation of the "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign. This project evolved into the "Obey Giant" campaign, which propelled him into the spotlight of the street art world.
However, Fairey's may be best known for creating the iconic "Hope" poster during the 2008 U.S. presidential election, supporting Barack Obama. The image became a symbol of the campaign.
Some of Fairey's works can be seen on buildings in downtown Charleston, including on the College Lodge dorm at 159 Calhoun Street.
