Charleston Crafts Gallery, an artist-owned cooperative in downtown Charleston, will present its May exhibition, The Classics: Black & White, opening with a public reception Friday, May 1, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Classics: Black & White explores contrast, form and surface through a focused palette. Across a range of mediums, artists examine depth, texture and material in nuanced ways, from bold surface treatments to subtle tonal variation. The exhibition highlights how working in black and white can produce work that is both striking and expressive.
Featuring original work by the gallery’s member artists, the exhibition showcases a range of fine craft reflecting the individuality and creative voices of the cooperative.
Featured artists include:
- Gini Steele, a textile artist creating contemporary fiber work that explores texture and structure through both modern and traditional techniques
- Anne John, a ceramic artist known for refined vessels and sculptural forms, with an emphasis on surface and tonal variation
- Marty Biernbaum, a ceramic artist whose work reflects more than four decades in clay, creating pieces that explore layered surfaces and expressive forms
- Laurie Prophater, a jewelry artist working in polymer clay, creating wearable pieces that range from primitive to playful
- Jim Sweeney, a ceramic artist creating vessels and sculptural forms using raku and saggar firing, resulting in one-of-a-kind surfaces
- Ashley Perez, a ceramic artist creating abstract work defined by organic forms, with pieces ranging from minimal palettes to more colorful, tactile surfaces
- Jennifer Brower, a jeweler creating intricate wire-woven pieces inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco design
- Amanda Mazza, a soapmaker creating all-natural, handmade soaps inspired by the textures, colors and scents of the natural world
