For the final weekend of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival as part of its Stelle di Domani series, The Department of Theatre and Dance at College of Charleston will present two performances, one in collaboration with Annex Dance Company, and the second as part of a new partnership with the Charleston Library Society.
The Red Suitcase is a dance concert presented by Annex Dance Company, a modern dance company based in Charleston. CofC Associate Professor of Dance Kristin Alexander serves as Annex Dance Company’s founder and artistic director.
The culmination of the Annex Dance Company’s annual residency with the Department of Theatre and Dance, The Red Suitcase is an evening-length work inspired by visual art displayed in a traveling art exhibition presented in a vintage suitcase. Curated by Mary Walker, the content of each box is filled by the work of eleven visual artists from all over the country. The concert is suitable for audiences of all ages.
Dark/Magic: Shakespeare’s Antagonists and Alchemists is a collection of scenes, sonnets, and speeches from Shakespeare’s classic works. A small ensemble of performers will weave together works from The Tempest, Macbeth, and more. As part of the College of Charleston Department of Theatre and Dance’s partnership with the Charleston Library Society, Dark/Magic will also be presented as a free performance as “Shakespeare on the Steps” during Second Sunday on the steps of CLS. The performance is suitable for audiences 14 and up.
Performances of The Red Suitcase will take place in the Simons Center Black Box Theatre located at 54 Saint Philip Street. Performances are Friday, June 6th at 7pm and Saturday, June 7th at 2pm and 6pm.
