For the first time, South of Broadway Theatre Company and The Void Theatre Company are co-producing and presenting together. The two entities are bringing “The Cake” by Bekah Brunstetter to Charleston this fall, and tickets are on sale now.
The performances will run October 12th and 13th and again on the 19th and 20th. Staying true to both company’s missions, each member of the cast lives right here in Charleston. "The Cake" is a representation of the dynamic challenges faced by people in our community everyday. Based on Masterpiece Cake Shop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission – a case about a gay couple who believe their civil rights were violated when the owner of the bakeshop refused to make their wedding cake because of his Christian beliefs.
Della makes cakes, not judgment calls – those she leaves to her husband, Tim. But when the girl she helped raise comes back home to North Carolina to get married, and the fiancé is actually a fiancée, Della’s life gets turned upside down. She can’t really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? For the first time in her life, Della has to think for herself.
