Witches can be right and giants can be good in Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical Into the Woods, opening April 18th at the Queen Street Playhouse.
The musical takes familiar fairy tale characters and their plots (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk) and inserts them all together in a new, interconnected storyline exploring the consequences of their actions and wishes. Joining that fab four are two new characters, The Baker & His Wife, a couple who are cursed by The Witch (there’s always a witch!) and seek to break the curse to have a child.
Joining the cast for our final production of the season is Footlight’s own Executive Director and two-time winner of Charleston City Paper’s Best Local Actor, Brian Porter in the role of The Baker. Prior to coming to Footlight, Porter was celebrated as one of Charleston’s most iconic and daring performers appearing in roles such as The Emcee in Cabaret and Hedwig in Hedwig & The Angry Inch. He joins an incredibly talented cast including other Footlight familiar faces including Jenny Bettke as Little Red Riding Hood and Jessica Shamble as Cinderella. The show is under the direction of guest director Jackson Clark Haywood (Misery, Proof).
