PURE Theatre is excited to announce the upcoming production of Zelda in the Backyard, a heartfelt one-woman play by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder. This production will run July 24 through August 16 at the Cannon Street Arts Center as PURE’s Preseason Summer Slam, offering audiences a compelling prelude to the company's 23rd season.
Inspired by Wilder's own life, Zelda in the Backyard follows Libby (played by Core Ensemble member Camille Lowman) as she embarks on a journey to restore the wrecked 1961 Rolls-Royce she inherited from her father. A little broken herself, Libby finds herself on a journey of love, loss, and all the roads in between, uncovering memories of her father that she thought were gone forever
“I am both thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to direct Zelda in the Backyard this summer at PURE,” says director Miles Boinest. “Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder's script is a touching, lyrical love letter to family, the South, and the discoveries we make about each of those things along the way. I look forward to sharing Zelda with audiences.” The production marks Boinest’s directorial debut at PURE, where he has been a Resident Designer for over a decade.
The show also marks the first time in PURE’s 5-year tenure at the Cannon Street Arts Center that they’ll be utilizing a flexible floor playing space, with on-stage seating for select audience members. “It’s going to be really fun,” says Artistic Director Sharon Graci. “Audiences who remember our King Street location know we can create incredibly immersive experiences with a more flexible layout. We improved the playing space at Cannon Street by constructing a flexible stage extension, which, when removed, creates an opportunity to do something special with the extra space.”
