PURE Theatre will present the Southeast regional premiere of Covenant by York Walker, running Oct. 2–25 at the Cannon Street Arts Center. Directed by Artistic Director Sharon Graci, the production is part of the 2025 MOJA Arts Festival.
Two years after his sudden disappearance, struggling guitarist Johnny “Honeycomb” James returns to his Georgia hometown transformed into a blues legend—igniting whispers that he struck a deal with the devil to gain his uncanny gift. But as secrets surface, it becomes clear he’s not the only one haunted by mystery. Inspired by the myth of Robert Johnson, this “striking new Southern Gothic” (The New York Times) explores the power of belief, the weight of ambition and the fragile line between rumor and truth.
“I’m thrilled to bring Covenant to Charleston audiences,” Graci said. “York Walker’s play is both mythic and intimate. It’s a story of faith, fear and longing, told through the rhythms of Southern folklore and music. It’s haunting, beautiful, deeply theatrical and a little spooky—which makes it especially perfect for this time of year. It’s a great play to launch our 23rd season.”
The cast includes Core Ensemble members Tonya Nicole and Zania Cummings, returning talent Dexter Mitchell (Father Comes Home From the Wars), and newcomers Trinity Griffin and Brandi Smalls.
Tickets range from $47 to $53. Pay What You Will performances will be held Oct. 2 and Oct. 8, with tickets available online one week before opening night. Student tickets are $12 for every performance. A livestream will be available Oct. 18. Tickets are on sale now at puretheatre.org.
