Formerly known as The Bearded Ax, the longtime Park Circle hangout has officially reopened as Bearded, A Social Tavern, debuting a new name and concept at 1077 E. Montague Ave. As of March 2, the space has transitioned from an ax-throwing venue into a full "barcade" and social tavern focused on flexible, time-based unlimited play.
“We built The Bearded Ax around bringing people together,” owner Ian Smith said. “That part isn’t changing. What’s changing is how people gather here. We’ve expanded far beyond one signature activity, giving our regulars more to explore and giving new guests a reason to walk through the door.”
New to the social tavern are hourly unlimited-play passes: $18 for one hour or $28 for two hours of unlimited play across the venue’s more than 32 games — one of the largest selections in Charleston. Guests can move freely between skeeball, air hockey, an indoor driving range, Big Buck Hunter, a Mario Kart Wii lounge, twin Fast & Furious racers, Super Bikes, Aliens Armageddon, Golden Tee, Space Invaders, Putter Pro Disc Golf, a massage chair and a giant Plinko board with rotating prizes.
Several games — including darts, shuffleboard, foosball, N64 and Sega Genesis consoles, and tabletop and board games — are free to play for all guests, while select experiences such as pinball and billiards remain pay-by-play.
Bearded will continue its programming calendar with league nights, Friday karaoke, Dungeons & Dragons meetups and Sober Sundays, along with monthly events such as Drink & Draw, Live From Park Circle and Velma’s Velvet Variety Show, creating opportunities for guests to connect beyond a typical night out.
The beverage program features more than 100 craft beers, along with wine, mead, sake, hard kombucha and sparkling seltzers. An extensive nonalcoholic menu includes NA beer and wine, CBD and D9 beverages, and mocktails, reinforcing the tavern’s inclusive approach.
Bearded, A Social Tavern is open Monday through Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m., Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
