Holding It Together is an evocative exhibition presented by artists Alice Colin and Elizabeth Northcut Williams exploring the intricate themes of ancestry and identity. Through their unique artistic lenses, both artists delve into personal and collective histories, creating a powerful dialogue that highlights the bonds between past and present. By intertwining various mediums and techniques, Colin and Williams invite viewers to reflect on their own heritages and the complexities of self-identification in a rapidly changing world. This exhibit promises to be a thought-provoking journey, urging audiences to consider how our roots shape who we are and how we connect with one another across generations.
Originally from Bordeaux, France, Alice Colin studied, worked, and lived in many countries like India, Spain, Italy, Ireland, and England, before settling in Charleston. Influenced by her background in psychology and communication, she developed her love of creating visual artworks using vibrant acrylics combined with recycled elements from daily life such as newspaper, leather, fabrics, discarded packaging, jar labels, and more. Her creative process aims to express emotions and thoughts using colors and patterns in a constant search for balance between shapes and shades. Her inspiration comes from her
travels, adopted countries, and people’s facial expressions, thus her numerous portraits that seek to capture the emotional charge, background, and experience a figure can exude. A self-taught artist, Alice currently works from her studio at Redux Contemporary Art Center in downtown Charleston and was a Visiting Artist at the Gibbes Museum of Art in late 2024. Elizabth (“Beth”) Northcutt Williams is the current Visiting Artist at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Her diverse body of work can be found in collections all over the country. Since receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Evansville, she has developed a wide range of techniques in oil painting, watercolor, drawing, and mixed media. Creating everything from portraits to murals, Beth loves to translate ideas into meaningful visual expression, often combining traditional techniques with more contemporary, expressive applications. Inspired by beauty and redemption, she is forever grateful to honor the significance of her subjects. Learn more about the artist at elizabethnorthcutwilliams.com.
