Nidum Gallery at Navy Yard North Charleston will present a new solo multimedia exhibition by Susan C. Gregory titled ‘Jaywalking’, featuring sculptural ceramics, pottery, encaustic works, and mixed media paintings. The exhibition highlights the artist’s intersectionality of creative matter in form, surface, and material through a diverse body of work that bridges traditional craft and contemporary visual art.
Crossing through ceramic sculpture and encaustic painting, Susan C. Gregory combines tactile components with layered visual processes. The ceramic works emphasize sculptural composition and the physicality of clay, while the encaustic and mixed media paintings incorporate wax, oil, photographed imagery and textured surfaces to create luminous depth and atmospheric compositions. Spanning her art practice, Gregory derives inspiration through landscape. In sculpture she heralds the moon, using an age-old traditional form to launch an interpretive contemporary series. In painting, human elements in nature are gathered from daily observations, often while walking. Found objects and industrial patterns are transposed with ubiquitous flowers and seasonal light to compose an experimental piece with a familiar sense of place.
The Navy Yard provides a bounty of inspiration with these themes and Gregory plans to share a small works series in spray paint and mixed media celebrating the historic district’s character.
Nidum Gallery supports contemporary artists working across disciplines and mediums. This exhibition continues the gallery’s commitment to presenting innovative work that engages material experimentation and cross-media dialogue.
