Gospel is coming to the Charleston Gaillard Center later this month. In conjunction with MOJA Arts Festival, the one-night event, Gospel at the Gaillard: Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Kelontae Gavin, Mike Brown & F.O.C.U.S., will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
“Gospel music in the Lowcountry has always been rich in talent,” says Charlton Singleton, MOJA's artistic director and artist in residence emeritus at the Charleston Gaillard Center.
The event has been in the making for over a year and was initially brainstormed by Singleton, along with Lissa Frenkel, President and CEO of the Charleston Gaillard Center. Together, they collaborated and secured many of the performers in the lineup, including Summerville native Kelontae Gavin and Charleston locals Mike Brown & F.O.C.U.S.
Headlining the event is Tasha Cobbs Leonard, a two-time Grammy winning Gospel singer and songwriter.
“We are excited to get Tasha Cobbs Letonard, a household name in Gospel music and a world class performer, in our city,” says Singleton.
The Gaillard Center will bring world class Gospel performers together as part of MOJA Arts Festival’s 40th anniversary season. The MOJA Arts Festival, which celebrates African-American and Caribbean contributions to western and world cultures, returns to Charleston September 26 – October 6, 2024. The festival includes visual arts, classical music, dance, gospel, jazz, poetry, R&B music, storytelling, theater, children’s activities, traditional crafts, and local foodways.
Singleton encourages music fans to attend this special event.
“This is not going to be your ordinary gospel concert. This is definitely a contemporary gospel concert where you will hear and see amazing things,” says Singleton. “The musicianship is going to be out of this world. It is a must-see, must-hear and must-experience event. Even if you're not a gospel fan, this event is for all music fans.”
