Meyer Vogl Gallery is pleased to announce “Contre-Jour,” a solo exhibition by Marc Hanson opening Sept. 4, 2026.
For his first official solo exhibition with Meyer Vogl Gallery, Hanson focuses on the practice of painting contre-jour, or painting the landscape against the light. Known for his expressive landscapes and atmospheric approach to light, Hanson explores how backlit compositions can transform even quiet or familiar scenes into something more dramatic and emotionally charged.
“I love to work this way, as it creates some drama, even in less-than-dramatic situations, and it’s a way of painting that lets me take any landscape and make it something beyond just the subject lit by frontal or three-quarter light,” Hanson said. “I think it would be an interesting show to see personally, and one that I’m loving to paint.”
Through shifting light, softened forms and silhouetted landscapes, “Contre-Jour” reflects Hanson’s continued exploration of observation and atmosphere in painting. The works move beyond straightforward depictions of place, instead capturing fleeting moments when light itself becomes the subject. Each painting offers a contemplative study of contrast, mood and the emotional resonance found within the landscape.
The opening reception for “Contre-Jour” will be held Friday, Sept. 4, at Meyer Vogl Gallery. The exhibition will be on view through Sept. 30, 2026.
