Charleston has been described as a “city set in a garden,” and there is no better time than spring to admire the beauty of window boxes spilling over with flowers and gardens filled with vibrant blooms.
This exhibition was inspired by the arrival of spring in the Lowcountry. “Charleston in Bloom” merges Elizabeth Middour’s passion for gardening with her love of painting. The subjects of her work are often grown in her garden and brought into her studio to be captured on canvas.
Step inside the artist’s colorful world, where springtime is celebrated and flowers are seen as a living work of art.
Elizabeth Middour has lived along the coast of South Carolina for most of her life. After studying art in high school, college and graduate school, she began a career in the decorative arts, creating faux finishes and murals, often alongside her mother, who was also an accomplished artist. After settling in the Charleston area in 2001, her work shifted toward fine art painting as she focused on raising her two children. The beauty of the Lowcountry and her love of the natural world inspire her work. Using oils as her medium, her style is representational, with an emphasis on color, values and contrast, employing loose brushwork with a well-trained touch.
Lowcountry Artists Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
