Lowcountry Artists Gallery is pleased to present “Frogs and Frames,” a dual exhibition featuring sculptures by Zan Smith and photography by Ivo Kerssemakers.
Dive into a world where copper frogs leap to life-size wonder. This captivating exhibition pairs handcrafted, larger-than-life copper sculptures with evocative photography that captures their metallic sheen, playful personalities and unexpected harmony with the natural world.
Zan Smith was born and raised in Charleston, where he spent his formative years working alongside his father in a Lowcountry workshop. It was there that Smith learned the technique of direct metal sculpture and honed his skills as a sculptor. Between learning to work with metal and attending his grandmother’s watercolor shows on Queen Street, Smith was drawn to the artist’s life. His mechanical inclinations, paired with Charleston’s lively creative community, guided him into a career as a sculptor. As a master craftsman and fine sculptor, Smith now has his own established aesthetic. His keen attention to detail and commitment to creating delightful, museum-quality pieces set his coveted works apart.
Ivo Kerssemakers is a Dutch-American photographer born in the Netherlands and based in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Specializing in medium-format landscape and cityscape photography, he uses long-exposure techniques — with neutral density filters up to 16 stops and exposures exceeding four minutes — to remove people and movement, creating still, contemplative and almost surreal scenes of iconic natural and historic environments.
“Frogs and Frames” merges Smith’s and Kerssemakers’ work into a joyful fusion of sculpture and image that celebrates transformation, whimsy and the magic of the everyday amphibian.
