As he celebrates his 83rd birthday this month, longtime Summerville resident and businessman Gerhard Jung is marking the occasion with something extraordinary: the launch of his memoir, From Rubble to Resilience—a gripping, inspirational story of survival, perseverance, and faith.
He'll also host a book launch event at the Turning Page Bookshop (1727 Ashley River Road, Charleston) on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Born in Germany and shaped by a childhood marked by hunger, fear, and loss, Jung fled his war-torn homeland with nothing but determination and an unyielding spirit. In 1970, at just 28 years old, he arrived in America without money, a trade, or a support system—only raw grit and hope for a better future.
Fifty-five years later, his story stands as a tribute to what’s possible when you refuse to give up.
“When you’re at the bottom,” Jung reflects, “there’s nowhere left to fall. The only direction is up—and that’s the path I chose.”
Jung’s book shares his incredible rise from poverty to purpose, chronicling his transformation from a scared young immigrant to a respected entrepreneur, husband, father, and man of faith. His words are a testament to the human spirit and a powerful reminder that our beginnings don’t have to define our endings.
The public is invited to attend the Aug. 2 book launch, meet the author, and hear firsthand how one man turned adversity into abundance, and hardship into hope.
