In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), local Kiawah Island artist Audrey Straus offers a unique, artful perspective on conservation through her coffee table book, “Native Plants of Kiawah Island: A Collection of Watercolors.”
Recently released, the 375-page hardcover features nearly 200 botanical watercolor paintings that document and celebrate the native flora that define Kiawah’s landscape. Audrey’s work is rooted in a deep appreciation for the natural environment and a desire to better understand and share the plants around her.
Blending art and conservation, the paintings highlight the essential role native plants play in supporting biodiversity and protecting coastal ecosystems. A portion of sales from the book benefits the Conservancy of the Sea Islands, supporting their work to preserve the land, water and wildlife of Johns, Kiawah and Seabrook Islands. “Native Plants of Kiawah Island” serves as a visually compelling reminder of the importance of protecting the Lowcountry’s natural environment, making it especially relevant as Earth Day approaches.
