Historic Charleston Foundation’s annual spring fundraiser, The Charleston Festival, is underway now through April 13 as a celebration of all things Charleston, including its architecture, history, and culture.
During the 2025 Festival Music Series, the Foundation will welcome Kanika Moore in a debut jazz project on March 20 at the Riviera Theater. Moore, a Charleston native and singer celebrated for her versatility across genres, will perform for the first time from her recently announced project, Times Are Changing: 100 Years of Black American Women in Music. This ambitious music endeavor honors the transformative contributions of Black women to American recorded music, tracing their legacy from the 1920s to today.
Drawing on her jazz and soul roots, Moore offers a musical journey through time, revisiting iconic works from Mamie Smith—the trailblazer of the 1920s golden age of jazz—to an original composition. With inspired arrangements crafted in collaboration with Jonathan Lovette, Moore reimagines these timeless pieces to showcase their enduring resonance.
“I’m thrilled to honor the women who paved the way, shaping the soundscape of American music and inspiring generations,” said Moore. “This project is a love letter to their legacy and the cultural significance of their artistry.”
Tickets are now on sale for this debut live performance at the historic Riviera Theater on March 20th. Additional Festival Music Series performances include Charlton Singleton and the Honeycomb Jazz Orchestra, The Plantation Singers and Ann Caldwell in various venues.
