An exhibit 70 million years in the making is opening next week at the South Carolina Aquarium. Jurassic Seas (included with Aquarium admission) sends guests into the Late Cretaceous Period to encounter life-size skeletal replicas, examine stunning fossils and learn through interactive displays.
Who will enjoy Jurassic Seas?
From fossil fanatics to biology buffs, this new experience will have everyone in the family playing paleontologist. In addition to the immersive experience of the exhibit, guests can enjoy a new photo-op in a megalodon jaw, plus an all-new virtual reality adventure (for an additional fee).
A Large-Scale Footprint
Jurassic Seas is the first exhibit housed in the new John A. Hill Family Discovery Gallery. This 1,200-square-foot space is designed for rotating exhibits, which the Aquarium plans to introduce about every 3 years. In addition to the new immersive space dedicated to these ancient marine species, the Aquarium has life-size skeletal replicas of more prehistoric marine animals throughout, bringing new excitement to the entire guest experience.
Species Highlights Include “T. Rex of the Sea”
Guests will marvel at the grand scale of these prehistoric ocean giants, including two tylosaurus rex — officially classified as a previously unknown species just last week, earning them the title of "T. rex of the sea." The two replicas span a length of more than 80 feet through the Aquarium Great Hall. The largest specimen within the new gallery is a 15-foot-long Protostega gigas, a prehistoric ancestor to the sea turtles we love today. After discovering stories of the world's earliest sea turtles, guests can visit patients currently undergoing rehabilitation in the Sea Turtle Care Center™.
