Charleston Crafts Gallery, an artist-owned cooperative in downtown Charleston, will present its June exhibition, Squaring the Circle, opening with a public reception Friday, June 5, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Borrowing its title from the geometric problem, Squaring the Circle explores the idea of overcoming limitations and pushing the boundaries of fine craft. The exhibition features work that balances precision with experimentation, with references to geometry and pattern across a range of mediums.
Featuring original work by the gallery’s member artists, the exhibition highlights contemporary fine craft that challenges expectations through material, process and form.
Featured artists include:
- Fairoozan, a paper artist and illustrator who uses quilling techniques to create colorful, layered works that combine graphic and sculptural elements.
- Nancy Warren, a fiber artist creating handwoven scarves, jewelry and textile pieces that explore texture, color and structure.
- Amanda Mazza, a soap-maker producing all-natural handmade soaps inspired by the natural world.
- Jennifer Brower, a jeweler creating wire-woven pieces influenced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco design.
- Susan Livingston, a mixed-media fiber artist incorporating hand-dyed fabrics, stitching and found natural materials.
- Selma Andrews, a jewelry and mixed-media artist working in polymer clay using the millefiori technique.
The opening reception will take place during the Charleston Gallery Association’s ArtWalk, a monthly event celebrating the visual arts in downtown Charleston.
