Tucked inside the Citadel Mall, Next Level Photo Education is a photography studio, classroom and creative space. Visitors are welcomed by founder Erika Hatfield, whose passion for photography has been shaping students’ skills since she opened the studio in 2018.
Hatfield has been working behind the camera for 18 years, though photography wasn’t her original plan.
“I was going to be a doctor,” she said with a laugh.
While in a pre-med program, she took a part-time job at a photography studio. Within weeks of training, she found herself captivated by the art form.
Her academic path led to a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in special education. Eventually, she combined her love of teaching with her craft, creating photography workshops for students of all ages. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hatfield pivoted to online instruction, a move that unexpectedly broadened her reach.
“In some ways it was better,” she said. “I have students from all over the world.”
Today, her classes at Next Level Photo Education range from programs for children as young as 3 to workshops for adults. True to her teaching background, Hatfield avoids lecture-style lessons in favor of hands-on experiences.
The Citadel Mall studio reflects that philosophy. Alongside classroom areas, Hatfield has created playful setups like the “Click Space,” a seasonal photo booth where backdrops change with each holiday. The space is designed to encourage creativity for both beginners and professionals.
Next Level Photo Education is a family operation. Hatfield runs the business with her husband, while their three teenagers help at the front desk. A team of professional photographers also instructs classes, bringing real-world expertise.
The studio has recently expanded into hosting birthday parties and school field trips, giving kids a chance to explore photography in a fun and social setting. Looking ahead, Hatfield hopes to grow the program even further.
“Everyone takes photos,” she said. “And there’s nothing else quite like this in the country.”
